Naval Thunder: The Atlantic Campaign

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Take your naval warfare to the next level with Naval Thunder: The Atlantic Campaign!

Finally!  A way to enjoy a naval campaign game without boring administration or complex record keeping!

This book provides a complete set of rules for running a campaign game covering the critical early phases of the naval war in the Atlantic during World War II.

The rules introduce a revolutionary chained event system where the choices and outcomes of earlier events and battles influence the events that may occur, and the options you have later.  No two campaigns play out the same way, providing infinite replayability.

The rules are set up to put you in control of the critical strategic choices that must be made within an ever changing environment of limited information and events that may be outside your control.  But the focus stays centered on the action on the tabletop as you battle it out with your opponent!

Realistic strategic concerns create historical choices for the commanders.   "Should I prolong the fight to finish off these enemy ships, knowing that enemy battleships might be heading this way?  Or should I play it safe, take what I've achieved and get out before they show up?"

Victory conditions ensure that players must make realistic choices about trade-offs between achieving objectives and preserving your forces, just as the historical commanders had to.  Fighting to the last shell is rarely the best option.

Launch raiding sorties, deploy forces to counter your enemy’s plans, evade U-Boats, or strangle the enemy’s supply lines.  The choices are yours!  Can you anticipate your opponent, or will you be caught scraping together scratch task-forces, to counter an unexpected threat?

The strategic choices are complex, but the record keeping is simple and easy thanks to the chained event system and campaign tracking guide.

Also included are a slew of crunchy new rules including:

  • 12 new data cards for ships never before seen in Naval Thunder
  • Sea State Effects rules
  • Rules for incorporating U-Boats into the campaign
  • Orders of Battle for the Royal Navy & her allies, as well as the German forces.
  • And much more!

Naval Thunder:  The Atlantic campaign is for two or more players, and can be played with or without a referee.

Naval Thunder: Battleship Row and Naval Thunder: Bitter Rivals are required for play.

Work is progressing on the Pacific Campaign, a more streamlined system than the Atlantic effort. We are also working on an "Orders" guideline for naval gaming to facilitate true simultaneous movement and to reflect the fog of war. A copy is posted on the Steel Dreadnoughts forum. Feel free to contact us if you'd like to help with playtesting.

Over the past two weekends we ran The Atlantic Campaign. The British had tough luck starting out losing Ark Royal, Courageous, and Royal Oak. Deutschland returned to Germany undamaged, but without making any contact with enemy surface or merchant forces. Graf Spee sank six merchant ships. She encountered cruisers Cornwall and Dorsetshire, sinking the latter, but taking heavy damage. She was ultimately repaired, but was in the yards for quite some time.
Both sides lost a few ships during the Norway campaign, with the German U-boat force particularly hard hit. A group of nine German destroyers leaving Narvik ran into Warspite and a solid British force in clear weather. With several ships short on fuel the outcome was not in doubt, but two British destroyers were lost. None of the German ships were able to escape.
The critical issue with the campaign, however, was the inability of the Germans to make contact with any convoys. This kept merchant ships losses low, and indirectly, British destroyer losses....See more

We posted another campaign replay on the Steel Dreadnoughts forum. This turned out to be another one point game with the Germans up one at 36 to 35. The replay includes a number of photos from the actions.

The final installment of the campaign was posted on the Steel Dreadnoughts forum. The final score was the British 33, Germans 32, a hard-fought draw.

We have started work on Atlantic II. We welcome any feedback from The Atlantic Campaign to incorporate as we write and playtest the next volume.

I think it is worth noting that the second session was played at a different location than the first. The gaming system of The Atlantic Campaign makes it easy to pick right back up after stopping. A half dozen sheets of paper contain all the information needed to keep track of on-going operations, battle damage, strategic allocations, etc.

Dear Richard,

Thanks. We are working on two volumes that follow on the Atlantic book. The first is an Atlantic II and the second is for the Mediterranean. We are currently playtesting a World War One book based on the hunt for Graf Spee's squadron.

Dear Charles,

Thanks. We have started work on a Mediterranean book and are also working on a Pacific campaign. The campaign format is more streamlined, but again focused on enough variations in force, time of day, etc., that replayability will be high.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
